Here we are almost there… Longer and brighter days are slowly settling in, we seem to be at the dawn of spring !!! With anticipation, we impatiently await the first opportunities for socializing….
For some people, cocktails and trendy parties are part of their work mandate. Between business meetings, benefit evenings, awards galas and fundraising events, opportunities to wear elegant outfits are common. But for most of us, these opportunities are rare.
When you receive the invitation for a special occasion you will be excited and touched by the offer. But your questions about how to interpret the suggested dress code will quickly come up.
Here is a short guide for the terms used and some tips on how to follow suit and be elegant and refined.
This dress code is less used now, but it is the most formal. Rather rare in our country but still used in the English nobility. So be on the lookout if you are invited into the high spheres of European Royalty.
Men should wear a black tail suit, white shirt and bow tie and a small jacket underneath.
Women must wear a long gala dress. Gloves and/or a shawl on the shoulders are a must and ideally the hair should be pulled up in a bun. It’s time to show off your sumptuous jewellery and stand up straight!
This dress code is most common for Fundraising Balls and Awards Galas. You can apply it for a wedding, especially if you are the parents of the bride or groom.
Women usually wear a long evening dress, but exceptions can be made. On the red carpets of the big Galas, for example, we see women dressed in elegant pants or cocktail dresses. Short outfits are welcome, but the look and materials must be chic and sophisticated.
For men, a 2 or 3 piece suit with a shirt, preferably white, a tie or a bow tie is a must.
This dress code may seem a bit vague!
For women, we will opt for a formal dress, but there are more variations in length. Below the knee or mid-length, but not long. A skirt/vest or pants/vest suit.
For men, a two-piece suit with a tie, but this time you can be a bit daring with the colours and fine patterns for the shirt.
This dress code can be proposed for formal events, which take place on an award day or simply corporate parties that are a little less chic than Galas and Balls.
Here’s a dress code that allows us to be a little more casual.
For women, a dress above the knee is quite appropriate, and the colour choice and style is really up to you.
For men, pants and a colourful shirt, without a jacket, and that’s it.
Let yourself go, but be careful, short and casual doesn’t mean without class.
How to approach the outfits.
The way we dress is a form of language, a code we have with other humans. We reveal without realizing it, facets of our personality, our audacity and our originality.
Whether it’s for a large event, with people you don’t know or a wedding within your family, the important thing is to feel comfortable in your outfit. At Maison Ariane Carle, we have a great selection of dresses https://arianecarle.com/collections/.
In order to represent yourself well it is always best to follow the recommended dress code. Some environments are more festive, others are more conservative. A fundraising ball for an art museum is likely to be more colourful than an awards ceremony in the business world.
If you are invited to a Gala or Ball in a community you are not familiar with, it is wiser to follow the dress code on your invitation card. You will be sure to be in the right tone and feel comfortable.
If you are invited to a ceremony such as a family wedding, you will certainly already have an idea of what the guests will wear. This will probably make it easier for you. Keep in mind that the person who needs to be showcased at a wedding is the BRIDE. So please don’t ensure that all eyes are on you! Regardless of the origin of the invitation, if the hosts recommend dress code, it is respectful to follow it. Decorum is not only in the way we dress, it is also in the way we behave and the attention we pay to the people around us. Receiving an invitation is a kind gesture that shows how important we are to the person inviting us, so in return, it is important to enter the game and abide by the desired dress code. You will have a charming and memorable evening!
